Latin and Greek Resources

Minimus

The most popular course is Minimus (www.minimus-etc.co.uk), which is backed up by training courses, grants, a website ‘highly recommended’ by Schoolzone, and centrally organised activities for pupils. The Primary Latin Project, who produce Minimus, also support schools by giving grants for books and advice on how to start up a Latin Club in your school. For the latter contact Barbara Bell (bmbellmini@aol.com (e-mail preferred) or Tel/Fax 0117 9531819). Address for grants below.

The iris project

A course developed for Hackney schools and also being used in Oxfordshire is part of the iris project (www.irismagazine.org). The effects of this project on the general literacy of pupils is being monitored and will be published at the end of the initial experiment. Contact Dr Lorna Robinson via the website.

 Traditional Latin courses

Schools that can make the time for a traditional Latin course have a wide choice of textbooks, including publications by GalorePark (www.galorepark.co.uk) which were written for Preparatory Schools.

 Secondary school courses

Some primary schools use courses such as the Cambridge Latin Course or the Oxford Latin Course with Years 5 or 6.

 Enrichment materials and workshops

It is worth contacting your local museum or Roman archaeological site to arrange a visit. This can generate enthusiasm for the Romans and their language. University Classics departments are often willing to provide speakers who can communicate with children. A list of such departments is on another page (Beginning Greek and Latin at University).

 Grants for materials

Grants may be available to help start up Latin in your school. See the separate sheet for the full list of grant-giving bodies.
